Who Is This Yancey?

Mr. Danny L. Yancey is originally from Oxford, NC. He is a summa cum laude graduate of North Carolina Central University where he received a B.A. degree in Music Education in 2003. While a student at NCCU he studied choral conducting with Mr. Frank Williams, voice with Ms. Annette Daniels and piano with Dr. Paula Harrell. Also during his time at NCCU, Mr. Yancey performed alongside choral conductor and composer Moses Hogan, conducted the NCCU Touring Choir and presented a research paper at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Mr. Yancey also holds a Master of Music (M.M.) degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a concentration in choral literature and conducting. This is Mr. Yancey’s 14th year as an educator.
Before coming to Martin, Mr. Yancey taught for nine and a half years in Durham, NC. While in Durham, Mr. Yancey was twice voted Teacher of the Year, his choirs consistently won superiors at festivals and was twice invited to perform at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida

Since coming to Martin in 2012, he has led the choirs in performances at the NC State Capitol Bldg., a performance for state conferences of ACDA (2015) and NAfME (NCMEA) (2015), and was invited to perform for the ACDA National Conference in Minneapolis, MN (2017). Martin's choirs have performed for the Magnet Schools of America's National Conference, have won 1st and 3rd place in a local radio station's choir competition and has produced annual recordings of students' original music available on iTunes and most digital music outlets called Mustang Music. He is extremely proud to teach such amazingly talented students.
In addition to teaching here at Martin, Mr. Yancey also serves as Director of Worship at Christ the King Presbyterian Church where he plays keyboard, leads worship and oversees the music and liturgy for all services.
Mr. Yancey is also an associate conductor with the Raleigh Boychoir where he conducts the Resident Choir.
He is a composer and has written a number of compositions pending publication for the Durham Arts Council, sacred compositions for area churches and general compositions for special performances by choirs around the Triangle area.
Additionally, Mr. Yancey has served as All-County clinician for a number of North Carolina counties.
Mr. Yancey is a member of the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the North Carolina Music Educator's Association (NCMEA). In NCMEA, Mr. Yancey has served on the Elementary Board as member-at-large and on the Executive board as District 9 president. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including Teacher of the Year (2007, 2011 and 2015) selected as a chaperone for the Honors Performance Series Honors Choir at Carnegie Hall (2015, 2016, 2017). He was named as a member of the 2016 class of NCCU's 40 under 40 award. and was named a Finalist for the 2015 GRAMMY Music Educator Award (one of 10 Finalists out of 7,000 initial nominees).
He is married to his best friend, Mrs. Deidre P. Yancey and together they have four beautiful children, Christopher (Champ), Olivia (Vay), Cameron (Mert) and Weston (Stone).
Mr. Yancey says that his biggest influence in becoming a music teacher is his high school chorus director, Mrs. Cindy Clark.
