Vocal Music
Magnet Choral Ensemble (Beginning) -- Year-Long Available for grade 6-8, no previous experience required.
Students will learn the basics of healthy vocal technique, ensemble skills and learn to read basic rhythmic and pitch notation. They will also receive interval training and learn to sight read using the solfege system. They will perform unison and 2-part music using a variety of choral literature. Students in this class should anticipate some after-school practices and evening performances. Students may audition for an upper level ensemble after completing this course.
Magnet Tenor-Bass Ensemble (Intermediate) -- Year-Long Instructor recommendation and/or audition required.
Students must demonstrate mastery of beginning levels of performance and knowledge during the audition process to become members of the group. Students will continue to apply correct singing technique, study vocal health issues and various elements of musical expression through developmentally appropriate and historic vocal literature. Students will use traditional notation in order to learn music, and to respond correctly to conductors’ gestures both in rehearsal and public performance. They will sing a variety of TB and TTB literature. Students in this class may be asked to represent the school in public performances, compete in adjudicated events, and should anticipate some after-school practices and evening performances.

Magnet Honors Chorus (Advanced) -- Year-Long Instructor recommendation and/or audition required.
Students must demonstrate mastery of intermediate levels of performance and knowledge during the audition process to become members of the group. Students will extend their development in vocal production and technique, interpretation, and reading. Students will continue to grow their ability to integrate rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, tempo, dynamics, and expression, as well as use of form, in their performance of SAB and SATB literature. This group will represent Martin and perform throughout the community of Raleigh, compete in adjudicated events, and should anticipate a busy schedule of after-school practices and evening performances.

Magnet Exploring Music through Science and Technology (52092Y0J)- Open to 7th and 8th grade only.
Explore music production as you learn how to use the most important tools of the industry. The course guides students in structuring a song, recreating sounds they hear, and building their own unique tracks. Topics covered include recording and audio sampling, synth building, drum programming, improvisation, and an introduction to basic mixing and mastering. This course ensures students understand the process of music production, essential music theory, basic piano skills, and how to compose music. Using audio production software like Soundtrap, students will learn music production and audio engineering techniques. By the end of the course, students will have composed and produced their own songs across genres.

Magnet Piano
- Level I (52092Y0A) Students will learn to read the musical staff in treble and bass clefs and basic rhythmic notation in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 meters. They will learn to match the letter names of keys with the staff and learn five finger patterns in the keys of C and G as well as corresponding chords in each position. Students will also learn melodies in middle C position. Students will initially learn with the aid of a Level I Adult Method piano course book, but may advance to additional easy classics, show tunes, and pop pieces during the course. Parents are invited to a final recital at the end of the course.
- Level II (52092Y0B) Level I or 2 years private instruction required. Students will continue building on the skills learned in Level I. Students in Level II advance to playing some of the major and minor scales with correct finger position. They also learn compound meters, playing at least one piece in 6/8 time. Students continue working in the Level I Adult Methods piano course, but may progress to more advanced classics, show tunes, and pop pieces throughout the course. Parents are invited to attend a final recital at the end of the course.
